Puppetry Arts back to the basics – the dialogue between tradition and modernity
(I) Histories that shaped us. Rediscovering Puppetry Traditions
Dear collaborators,
The editorial board of CONCEPT academic journal and UNATC’s Research Development and Innovation Department invites you to submit research works, such as original articles and scientific essays, for the dossier Puppetry Arts back to the basics – the dialogue between tradition and modernity. (I) Histories that shaped us. Rediscovering Puppetry Arts Traditions. We invite researchers, art and theatre historians, theatre creators and academics to share their research and experiences regarding puppetry traditions around the world, with an emphasis on the introduction and contextualization of puppetry traditions for the uninitiated contemporary audiences and readers.
Suggested topics that can inspire you in organizing the material are:
- Puppeteers’ relationship with the object in popular puppetry traditions. How the relation between the animate and the inanimate evolved and differs between traditions;
- The dramaturgy for puppets. Subjects, characters and themes in puppetry traditions around the world. Classical playwrights for the puppet stage;
- Scenography in the puppet theatre and puppet building. Means of construction and the visual language of traditional-popular puppets and puppet spaces (e.g. the castelet);
- Lesser-known histories. Different forms of puppetry traditions that developed, thrived or disappeared in the shadow of established popular puppetry traditions;
- Puppets as a phenomenon without borders. In what ways historical popular puppetry traditions influenced the rise and development of other nations popular puppetry traditions? (e.g. the relationship between the Turkish Karagöz and the Greek Karagiozis);
- Puppetry and community. The social aspects of puppetry traditions and popular puppetry as community theatre;
- Puppetry archeology. How do we retrace the ephemeral? Retracing the details of puppetry traditions from archives and living memory;
- Safeguarding for the future. Endeavors that follow to archive or promote the survival of popular puppetry traditions;
- Modern perspectives and interpretations of popular puppetry traditions around the world. A critical perspective, what we keep and what we distance from.
